Rev. Dorothy Mae Avent

Rev. Dorothy Mae Avent affectionately known as “MAMA” or “AUNT DOT” was born July 17. 1936 to the late Sell and Carrie Harrison in Whitaker North Carolina. She attended Nash county public schools. Dorothy married the love of her life, her best friend Rev. Paul Avent Sr. on January 5. 1954 and they were married for 40 years until his passing in 1993. During their Union three children were born Eunice, Mable and Paul Jr. In 1957 the happy couple decided to relocate to Washington DC from Rocky Mountain NC. `When Dorothy was 18 years old she decided to give her life to Christ and from that day forward she was a devoted woman to the lord. She was a loyal and faithful member of New St. James Pentecostal Church until her death. Mama became an Ordained Minister and served as President of the Southern District Union for over 20 years. Dorothy worked for GSA as custodian until she retired after 25 years of services at The Justice Department and The World bank in Washington DC. She served as a volunteer at Brentwood community center for several years helping the elderly. Dorothy was a selfless servant of God she would never hesitated to help anyone in need from her nieces to nephews to her sisters and brothers. She even dropped everything and moved to North Carolina to become her Mother’s primary care giver until her passing in 2005. Not only was Mama a mother to her children and grandchildren she would bring their friends in, clothe them, feed them and even give them therapy when needed. Mama wasn’t certified but a bona-fide therapist on demand. Those of you close to Mama know what THERAPY is… Dorothy departed this life on Monday March 31, 2014 at 8:47 a.m. at St. Thomas More Nursing Home in Hyattsville, Md. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, Two caring daughters, Eunice Ferrell and Mable Avent; One devoted son Paul Avent Jr. (Sheena); One sister Belinda Johnson; One Brother Anthony Harrison (Margaret); Three brother in-laws: James Avent, Elder Cornelius Avent (Cortez) all of Rocky Mountain NC, and Johnny Avent of Washington DC; 9 wonderful grandchildren: James, Kenneth (Tonya), Raymond (Meshell), Elizabeth, Roland, Phillip (Carmen), Kisha, Tiffany (Shawn), Winifred; 19 great-grandchildren; One God daughter, Delphia Avent and A long time appreciated friend Pastor O.B. Warren; and host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving Husband, Rev. Paul Avent Sr; beloved sisters, Joyce Arrington (Luther) and Patricia Joyner (John); One brother, Marilyn Harrison; and One son-in-law, Glenn Ferrell. “Earth hath no sorrow that heaven can not heal”
